A test of principles

June 04, 2008 3:21 AM

During the week of their island adventure, the teens who were left in the house were visited by Kuya Primo, a leader of one of the tribes of Palawan. Their weekly task was to make beaded accessories to be sold at the Teen-dahan, the proceeds of which will benefit the said tribe. Unfortunately, the teens failed at this task. To teach them the value of responsibility and of keeping one’s word, Kuya gave them more time to accomplish the pending task. Still, they were unable to finish it. Since they weren’t able to do it as a group, they then had to make 100 necklaces each within an hour, or a punishment was in store. Yet again, the teens were unable to finish the task.

Disappointed by their lack of effort to keep their promise and their initiative to finish the task (Kuya didn’t wake them up to test this), they were then ordered to gather all their clothing and put them in a pile in the garden area. Then, Robi was made to get the liter of gasoline from the storage room. Unknown to the teens, there was no gasoline in the container. Rather, it was a test of their principles.
Nikki was sent out into the garden and tasked to set the pile of clothes on fire. The In Chick looked at the clothes, opened the container, and went back to the Confession Room. She couldn’t bear to perform the task, and risked nomination for going against Kuya. The others felt and acted likewise.

It seemed like a bandwagon effect, so Kuya had Ejay, Beauty, and Robi go into the Confession Room individually. All were punished with automatic nomination since they disobeyed the previous orders. Kuya then struck a bargain with them: he would retract the nomination and give them a shot at being part of the Big Four if they would burn the pile of clothes. As much as they wanted to be part of the Big Four, all chose to stick by their principles and chose an automatic nomination rather than perform the task.

Ejay hoped to represent those who were losing hope at reaching their dreams. He also needed the money. It was truly a decision that brought him to tears, but he chose not to do it. He wanted to be a good example, he says, yet if he does that, how will he be regarded as a good example to others? Beauty wanted to do prove herself to her family and others, was willing to give up her own clothes, but would not burn the things of others. Finally, Robi was called in, where he chose to disobey Kuya’s orders. This time, he would rather go against Kuya’s wishes and go with what he thought was right. All three exited the room, obviously disturbed. Little do they know that this was test … which they all passed with flying colors.
